ABOUT THIS PAINTING...
Acrylic and colored pencils were used to create "Solitary and Sovereign", a painting done specifically to capture this magnificent animal in its natural habitat of the northern states and territories of Canada. Particular attention was given to the fur and posture of this animal to capture and show them as not only the strong, powerful and potentially ferocious animal they are, but also to show them as beautiful and intelligent. Other elements of the composition were used to reflect and capture the solitary and elusive nature, so typical of these creatures.
ABOUT THE ARTIST...Steve Oliver
![]() Steve was born, raised and spent more than 30 years of his life in northern New York. Growing up between the Thousand Islands and the Adirondack Mountains, and surrounded by the diverse wildlife of the region, gave him a deep sense of appreciation for the outdoors, which he has incorporated into his artistic endeavors. Although self taught, he is very proficient with several mediums and techniques, although he does prefer acrylics, ink and colored pencils. Steve tries to capture the character and personality of each animal, by accurate renderings of anatomy and by placing them in a habitat natural to the species. Inspirations come from almost everywhere, including those in places like Alaska, Florida, Wyoming and Labrador, Canada. During the past 20 years, Steve has received much recognition and won numerous awards and honors, while participating in some of the most prestigious wildlife shows and competitions throughout the United States. His work has been selected for several conservation stamps and has benefited a variety of wildlife and habitat organizations. Prints are available of this painting.
